Bats & Rabies

Also known as hydrophobia is a viral zoonotic neuroinvasive disease that causes acuteencephalitis (inflammation of the brain) in mammals. It is most commonly caused by a bite from an infected animal, but occasionally by other forms of contact. If left untreated in humans it is usually fatal. In some countries it is a significant killer of livestock. The rabies virus makes its way to the brain by following theperipheral nerves. Theincubation period of the disease depends on how far the virus must travel to reach thecentral nervous system, usually taking a few months. Once the infection reaches the central nervous system and symptoms begin to show, the untreated infection is usually fatal within days. In the beginning stages of rabies, the symptoms are malaise, headache, and fever, while in later stages it includes acute pain, violent movements, uncontrolled excitements, depressions, and the inability to swallow water (hence the name hydrophobia). In the final stages, the patient begins to have periods of mania and lethargy, and coma. Death generally occurs due to respiratory insufficiency.

Bats are one of the best natural means of insect control and simply killing bats to correct a bat problem and in the case of endangered bat species illegal by federal and state law.

We know how to trap , we know how to get rid of bats we are professional bat exclusion specialists. We also provide Bat Removal Services.

Most nuisance bat problems are the result of poor home maintenance or neglect by the builder. Builders have little knowledge of how to prevent the entry of bats , and just because a home is water tight for rain does not mean bats, birds and other wild animals can not gain access to your home. We provide a very thorough inspection of your home and in addition to identifying a bat problem and corrections we also will inspect your entire property and suggest changes to the habitat on your property in addition to looking for bat access points.

We provide bat exclusion services that actually do no harm to bats and allow bats to leave an not regain access to your home, business, barn etc and never actually have to handle the bats.

Bats & Maternity

In most species of Chioptera, or Bats the female bats usually have only one offspring per year. A baby bat is referred to as a pup. Pups are usually left in the roost when they are not nursing. However, a newborn bat can cling to the fur of the mother and be transported, although they soon grow too large for this. It would be difficult for an adult bat to carry more than one young, but normally only one young is born. Bats often form nursery roosts, with many females giving birth in the same area, be it a cave, a tree hole, or a cavity in a building. Mother bats are able to find their young in colonies of millions of pups. Pups have even been seen to feed on other mothers’ milk if their mother is dry. Only the mother cares for the young, and there is no continuous partnership with male bats.

Many laws are in place or being put into place in order to protect the continuation of bat species. For many years very little law or regulation was in place and we have seen a decline in bat populations die to bats being removed from homes and their young pups left to die unable to fend for themselves. Maternity periods are related to the latitude or how far north your state is in North America. Typically southern states start earlier and northern states start later.

Choosing to go ahead and have bats completely removed or excluded from a home during maternity season is a very poor decision. Motherless pups wander homes in the absence of their mothers searching for them and usually end up all over the homes attic and wall voids and die. Imagine large someone sticking five pounds of ground beef in various spots around your home rotting and the expense of replacing the walls, insulation and deodorizing your home. Removing all bats, and their young during a maternity season is at most a dice throw and the homeowner often becomes the loser and at a considerable expense.

Listen to your bat professional, let them inspect your bat infestation and determine the best time of year (Before April-May and After July-August) . State laws often dictate safe periods but a visual inspection and counting flights is often the best guide to determine when the pups are flying.

Example: A bat colony which typically has fights of 90 or so bats leaving a home nightly begin to jump to numbers closer to 180. This would indicate a maternal colony of 90 and then a pup for each mother flying. Actual numbers will fluctuate daily and a week or so after an increase in flight sizes is normally the best time to have a complete exclusion of your home. An inspection by a professional is always best before attempting any exclusions.

Bats Myths & Facts

However, bats do not belong in our homes and buildings and this web site is designed to help you understand bats and discern yourself from the many myths about them and finding a qualified professional from the many snake salesmen out there with gimmicks to take your money and laugh all the way to the bank. We know how to get rid of bats by bat proofing your
home, building or structure.

Facts:

1. Bats both large and small are insectivores. Each bat on daily night flight can consumer about 1000 insects an hour or roughly 6000-8000 insects each and every night. This is simply the best natural pest control we have on earth and every bat if handled properly can be returned back to the wild and help us keep all the bug populations down.

2. Bats are not vampires and there is no reaosn to fear them. Myths have been running around for centuries that they can become entangled in your hair and it is far from the truth. Bats have a built in sonar like capability called echo location and can in mid flight remove a tiny mosquito flying. They also know exactly where you are and will avoid any contact with you. They may get close to
your face but they are not trying to harm or frighten you.

3. Bats are flying mammals and live in colonies if you see a bat resting I am confident a colony is also near by in your attic, soffits, behind shutters or even the hollows of a tree.

4. Bats will bite if handled. They have tiny razor like sharp teeth and should only be handled by a trained professional wearing gloves and exercising care in their handling.

5. Bats are not blind. They are however very light sensitive and are nocturnal mammals.

Please call us for a bat inspection of your home today and make your home bat free today.

We do not use poisons and pesticides and do it the natural and most proven method by using some of the finest mole traps in the professional mole trapping & mole control industry.

South Bend Mole Control

Moles: Biology and Behavior

Moles are very small mammals that live most of their entire lives underground. Moles are rarely ever seen other then the damage they eave in lawns. Moles and their damage are easily confused with other small mammals like voles, pocket gophers, mice, shrews,  and ground squirrels.

The most conspicuous features of the mole are its greatly enlarged, paddlelike forefeet and prominent toenails, which enable it to “swim” through the soil. Moles have strong legs, short necks and elongated heads. They lack external ears, and their eyes are so small that at first glance they appear to be missing.

A mole’s fur is soft and brownish to grayish with silver highlights. When brushed, the fur offers no resistance in either direction, enabling the mole to travel either backward or forward within burrows.

Moles prefer moist, sandy loam soils in lawns, gardens, pastures and woodlands. They generally avoid heavy, dry clay soils. They construct extensive underground passageways — shallow surface tunnels for spring, summer and fall; deep, permanent tunnels for winter use. Nest cavities are located underground, connecting with the deep tunnels.

Because moles have high energy requirements, they have large appetites. They can eat 70 to 80 percent of their weight daily. They actively feed day and night at all times of the year. Moles feed on mature insects, snail larvae, spiders, small vertebrates, earthworms, and occasionally small amounts of vegetation. Earthworms and white grubs are preferred foods.

Mole activity in lawns or fields usually shows up as ridges of upheaved soil. The ridges are created where the runways are constructed as the animals move about foraging for food. Burrowing activity occurs year-round, but peaks during warm, wet months. Some of these tunnels are used as travel lanes and may be abandoned immediately after being dug. Mounds of soil called molehills may be brought to the surface of the ground as moles dig deep, permanent tunnels and nest cavities.

Moles breed in late winter or spring and have a gestation period of about four to six weeks. Single annual litters of two to five young are born in March, April or May. Young moles are born hairless and helpless, but growth and development occur rapidly. About four weeks after birth, the moles leave the nest and fend for themselves.

Moles in the natural environment cause little damage. They are seldom noticed until their tunneling activity becomes apparent in lawns, gardens, golf courses, pastures, or other grass and turf areas.

Mole Activity

The mole activity people usually see is of two kinds — raised ridges or surface tunnels and mounds. These raised ridges or surface tunnels are unique to moles. No other animal leaves this evidence of its presence. However, mole activity often is confused with that of the pocket gopher, which also is found in Missouri.

Moles leave cone-shaped mounds on the surface of the ground. These usually are not numerous. Most often these mounds contain coarse soil and earth clods.

The mole pushes this soil to the surface, especially when digging deep runs. These deep runs lead to a nest or provide tunnels for use in the winter or during the hot times of the summer. In building these mounds, the mole pushes the soil up through the center, much as a volcano is formed.

Moles push dirt through vertical tunnels onto the surface. Mounds are good places to use fumigants, since they are believed to mark deep runs or nest areas.

People often confuse pocket gopher mounds with mole mounds. Pocket gophers are rodents and have different feeding habits than moles. Traps designed to catch moles usually will not catch pocket gophers, or vice versa. Therefore, it is important to correctly identify which animal you have in the damage situation. In some areas, both animals exist in the same place.

The pocket gopher does not construct raised ridges or surface tunnels. Pocket gophers dig two kinds of tunnels — one about 5 to 8 inches under the surface and other deeper tunnels that may go down several feet below the surface.

Unlike the mole, the pocket gopher constructs many mounds. These mounds are of finely sifted soil. Sometimes they can be rather large, but most often they contain about one-half gallon of soil. The pocket gopher digs a main tunnel, then a lateral side tunnel to create the mound, thus getting rid of soil accumulated in digging the underground tunnels.

Indianapolis Skunk Remedy That Works !!

I had a neighbor while growing up that had a dog who had cornered a skunk on the property and she ran out with a broom to stop the encounter and ended up both her and her dog were sprayed with that ever memorable odorous yellow liquid that seemed to just linger on for days.

Remedies that don’t work! One of the most popular old wives tales is tomato juice which actually just gives you a smelly pet and a waste of your time and tomato juice.

Here Is A Popular Skunk Remedy Recipe that really works:In a plastic bucket or similar container, mix the following ingredients very well:

1 quart of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide- Most Hydrogen peroxide is sold by the pint so you will probably need two bottles.1/4 cup of baking soda-NaHCO3-Sodium Bicarbonate Note: Make sure you are using Baking Soda and never washing soda since the alkalinity of washing soda (sodium carbonate) is very powerful and will actually cause burning of your skin and any membranes it comes into contact with1 to 2 teaspoons liquid soap-Soft Soap, Ivory or Dawn Dish Soap work very well and I recommend them!

Recommendations:

1. Very large pets often require an additional quart of lukewarm tap water to ensure complete coverage of your pet.

2. Wash pet your thoroughly, working the solution deep into the fur. Let your nose be your guide, and simply leave the remedy solution on for about 5 minutes or until the odor is gone. Some areas may require a “rinse and repeat” washing.

3. Skunks usually aim for the face, but try to keep the solution out of the eyes – it stings. If you have any cuts on your hands you might want to wear latex or rubber gloves for the same reason.

4. After treatment, thoroughly rinse your pet with tepid tap water.

5. Pour the any remaining spent solution down the drain with running water. You can cause injury by trying to store it since the solution will actually build up pressure while stored and can cause serious injuries.

The best way to prevent an encounter with skunks is a good offense by following these guidelines:

1.Do a visual inspection of your property and eliminate any denning sites. Close off all areas with hardware mesh cloth and bury it 1 1/2 -2 feet deep to prevent digging.

2. Keep your trash cans sealed with lids that close or keep them out of reach by any wildlife.

3. Never feed your pet or any stray animal outdoors. Feeding outdoors encourages both rats and mice to also inhabit your property and will attract raccoons and squirrels.

4. Don’t litter your property with any junk, like old cars, lumber or firewood unless you can keep them stored in a place to prevent a skunk from digging in and creating a den habitat.

5. If you encounter skunk do not provoke them either leave them alone or call in a professional. Don’t try disturbing them by using any harassment techniques such as the use of any noise or aggressive actions and for the record their is no repellents that work to remove them and this includes moth balls or moth ball flakes. These measures actually may cause the offending animal to spray again and make the situation worse then it already was.

We do bat control, bat removal, bat in attic, bats in attic, bats in chimney, bats in house, bat feces removal, bat guano removal, insulation replacement, & bat exclusions.

Histoplasmosis

This is also known as Darling’s disease,is a disease caused by the fungus Histoplasmacapsulatum. Symptoms of this infection vary greatly, but the disease primarily affects the lungs. Occasionally, other organs are affected; this is called disseminated histoplasmosis, and it can be fatal if untreated. Histoplasmosis is common among AIDS patients because of their lowered immune system.

Bats  & Rabies

Also known as hydrophobia is a viral zoonotic neuroinvasive disease that causes acute encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) in mammals. It is most commonly caused by a bite from an infected animal, but occasionally by other forms of contact. If left untreated in humans it is usually fatal. In some countries it is a significant killer of livestock. The rabies virus makes its way to the brain by following the peripheral nerves. The incubation period of the disease depends on how far the virus must travel to reach the central nervous system, usually taking a few months.
